This section provides descriptions for and links to the technical documents in the SQL Server Protocols documentation set that are currently released as preview PDF versions. These documents are in the process of being created or updated for either new product versions or significant product updates.

Microsoft may publish technical documents as preview (also called pre-release or preliminary) versions for community review and feedback. Not every technical document is published for preview, and each document’s preview period may vary. After the preview period is completed, each document is published to its appropriate released-version location at SQL Server Technical Documents.

To provide feedback or ask questions about a preview version of a technical document, you can use the Open Specifications forums.

[MS-CSDLBI-Diff]: Conceptual Schema Definition File Format with Business Intelligence Annotations

Specifies the structure and semantics of conceptual schema definition language (CSDL) annotations that are used in business intelligence (BI) applications.

This document has been updated as follows:

  • Added a new Boolean parameter that, when set to true, includes strings mixed with other data types in the computation where such strings were previously ignored by the DAX Minx and Maxx functions.

[MS-SSAS-Diff]: SQL Server Analysis Server Protocol

Specifies the SQL Server Analysis Services Protocol, which provides methods for a client to communicate with and to perform operations on an analysis server.

This document has been updated as follows:

  • Added a new property to the definition of the Database XSD schema.

  • Added a new column to the DISCOVER_OBJECT_COUNTERS schema rowset.

  • Added a new property to the MDSCHEMA_CUBES schema rowset.

  • Added a new optimization that optimizes MDX Union queries to create more efficient plans when multiple hierarchies are involved.

  • Added new DAX server properties.

In addition, the document has been revised to clarify other content.

[MS-SSAS-T-Diff]: SQL Server Analysis Services Tabular Protocol

Specifies an extension of the SQL Server Analysis Services protocol [MS-SSAS] by specifying the methods for a client to communicate with and perform operations on an analysis server that uses Tabular databases that are at compatibility level 1200 or higher.

This document has been updated as follows:

  • Updated the SQL Server 2025 Analysis Services Tabular metadata to include mechanisms that define optimizations to control model performance and behaviors.

  • Improved the Calculation Groups feature.

In addition, the document has been revised to clarify other content.
