Azure Monitor Alert Rule for Service Bus Abandoned Messages

Key Points to remember:

 "Abandoned Messages" Metric:

 Scope: Only applies at the subscription level.

 Reason: Messages are abandoned when a receiver fails to complete them, which only occurs within a subscription (not directly at the topic).

 Implication: If you query this metric at the topic or namespace level and try to split by EntityName, Azure Monitor won't return any values for EntityName, because it doesn't recognize specific subscriptions in that scope.

 "Dead-lettered Messages" Metric:

 Scope: Applies to queues, topics, and subscriptions.

 Implication: You can query this at the topic level and still see correct EntityName values because it’s valid across those entity types.

 Azure Monitor Behavior:

 When querying a metric that only applies to a lower-scope entity (like a subscription), your query scope must match or be more specific (i.e., include the subscriptions) for dimensions like EntityName to populate.

 If the scope is too broad (e.g., namespace or topic without specifying a subscription), the portal may show the dimension as available but without any data — because it's looking in the wrong place.

 Recommendation: When troubleshooting or setting up alerts:

 Always match your scope to the metric’s applicability.

 For subscription-level metrics like Abandoned Messages, explicitly scope down to the subscription level.

 For broader metrics like Dead-lettered Messages, you can keep a higher-level scope if needed.
