Hi, could someone let me know about "file discovered" activity in purview? Does it discover files for each scan?

I've deployed IP Scanner recently (to run in discovery mode). I could see the files being scanned as per the information in the log path but for some reason in Purview content explorer, can't see anymore "file discovered" activity (i can see other activities like file modified, file created etc..,) It is showing up the "file discovered" activity till Monday but from past few days, it isn't showing up in purview. Has anyone experienced this issue before? Thanks.

Hi @Niharika Ch Yes, the "File Discovered" activity in Microsoft Purview generally shows up when new files are discovered during a scan, particularly when using the IP Scanner in discovery mode. However, it’s important to note that Purview only logs "file discovered" when a file is newly detected — if a file has already been discovered in a previous scan, it won’t trigger that activity again in subsequent scans, even if it’s still being scanned.

Since you're still seeing activities like "file modified" or "file created," that confirms the scanner is active. The absence of "file discovered" likely means:

There haven't been any new files added in the scanned locations.

The same files are being picked up again, which doesn’t count as a new discovery.

Or possibly, there’s a filtering issue in Content Explorer or a delay in updates.

You mentioned it was working until Monday — so here are a few quick checks:

    1. Have any new files been added to the scan targets since then? If not, this is expected.
    2. Check the scanner logs to confirm that discovery mode is still enabled and scanning successfully.
    3. Try adjusting the filters in Content Explorer (date range, activity type, etc.) to make sure results aren't being hidden.
    4. If everything seems in place but the behavior still seems off, consider opening a support ticket — there might be a backend sync or update issue.
