What is E_RUNAWAY_QUERY error?

The E_RUNWAY_QUERY error in Azure Data Explorer indicates that a query has exceeded the internal resource limits during execution, such as memory consumption, CPU usage, String size in aggregations, Row expansion limits and Result set size. This is a type of partial query failure where system detects the issue after the query has started running, potentially leading to incomplete or incorrect results.

How do we systematically Debug and pinpoint the root cause of E_RUNAWAY_QUERY error?

Check Query Failure Details

Use the following command to find failed queries:

.show queries
| where StartedOn > ago(30m) and Status == "Failed"
| project QueryId, Text, StartedOn, Duration, FailureReason

Then investigate the specific query:

.show query_details <QueryId>

This provides Operator-level memory and CPU usage, Row counts and Execution time per step.

mv-expand and summarize operators are often the cause:

 mv-expand can exponentially increase row count if it expands large arrays.

 summarize with functions like make_list() or make_string() can exceed string/column size limits if aggregating large values.

Even small datasets can explode during execution if there’s a dynamic column or large group sizes.

Use this pattern to detect oversized rows or arrays:

YourTable
| extend size = strlen(tostring(YourDynamicColumn))
| summarize avgSize=avg(size), maxSize=max(size), count()
| sort by maxSize desc

For arrays:

| extend arrLength = array_length(YourArrayColumn)
| summarize maxLen=max(arrLength), avgLen=avg(arrLength)

Apply Limits and Filters:
Filter early: Reduce data before using mv-expand.

Limit expansion: 

| where array_length(arr) < 100
| mv-expand arr

Limit aggregations:

| summarize list=take(make_list(Column), 1000) by GroupKey

 Use Safety Settings During Testing:

.set query_take_max_records = 100000

 This prevents the engine from scanning too much data during testing.

Are there any built in tools in ADX?

ADX provides several tools:

• .show queries → View running and completed queries.

• Use .set query_take_max_records = N to cap rows processed during testing. Help
  prevent runaway queries or excessive resource use.

KQL Engine is struggling even processing reasonably small amount of manageable volume of data?

Even when working with a small dataset, the KQL engine can struggle if certain inefficiencies exist within the query or the data itself.

A common issue is data skew, where just a few rows contain extremely large arrays or dynamic structures, causing disproportionate resource consumption during operations like mv-expand or summarize. Additionally, unoptimized query logic such as applying filters or projections too late can result in the engine processing more data than necessary.

Finally, operations that summarize or expand unbounded structures without limits (e.g., make_list() on high-cardinality groups or mv-expand on large arrays) can lead to excessive memory usage, triggering internal limits even when the overall dataset size appears manageable.

Are there resource constraints in your ADX cluster (CPU, memory, query limits)?
