Unexpected error when adding my microsoft account to the Outlook app on my iPhone

I took over an iPhone XR from my company after retirement. That device was secured by Intune and Airwatch (certficates). These have been wiped by our IT-department and there are no certificates left in "VPN-devicemanagement".

However, if I download the Outlook app on my iPhone XR and I want to add my private Microsoft account to the app, I've noticed two things:

  • When I click in the Outlook app on button 'Add Account', I still see the old company e-mail addresses; one managed in Airwatch and one in Intune.
  • When I add my Microsoft private account ******@outlook.com in the Outlook app by clicking button 'Create New Account', at the end of the configuration process I get the error message: "the custom error module does not regognize this error"

So, I think that when the company wipes an Airwatch/Intune iPhone there are still settings left that cause the above.

How can I remove these and use Outlook app private?

@Richard Hahlen, Thanks for posting in Q&A. It seems there might be some residual settings or profiles left on your iPhone XR from the previous management by Intune and Airwatch. Here are a few steps you can take to try and resolve this issue:

1, Make sure there's no existing user profile under outlook and "VPN-devicemanagement".

2, Clear Safari Cache on the iPhone.

    3, Reinstall outlook app.

If none of the above steps work, you might consider performing a factory reset. This will erase all data on your iPhone, so make sure to back up your data first:

Hope the above suggestion can help.
