Azure Patch Manager Error Code (100) - Ubuntu 24.04 LTS

While testing the capability's of Azure Arc for on-prem servers using 24.04 LTS I'm receiving the below.

The machine show connected inside azure arc -> machine name. However when attempting to use the updates -> Check for updates the error below is generating in azure.

Assessment failed due to this reason: Assessment completed with 1 errors

Unexpected return code (100) from package manager on command: LANG=en_US.UTF8 sudo apt-get -s dist-upgrade -oDir::Etc::Sourcelist=/var/lib/waagent/Microsoft.SoftwareUpdateManagement.LinuxOsUpdateExtension-1.0.45.0/tmp/msft-aumc-security-patches-1d6d5e68-8f77-488b-9b23-d5f3ea923a45.list and output: E: Type 'URIs:' is not known on line 1 in source list /var/lib/waagent/Microsoft.SoftwareUpdateManagement.LinuxOsUpdateExtension-1.0.45.0/tmp/msft-aumc-security-patches-1d6d5e68-8f77-488b-9b23-d5f3ea923a45.list

The file location of /var/lib/waagent/Microsoft.SoftwareUpdateManagement.LinuxOsUpdateExtension-1.0.45.0/tmp/msft-aumc-security-patches-1d6d5e68-8f77-488b-9b23-d5f3ea923a45.list does not exist on any Ubuntu Linux Sytems.

However servers running 22.04.5 LTS using same enrollment file are functional. File /var/lib/waagent/Microsoft.SoftwareUpdateManagement.LinuxOsUpdateExtension-1.0.45.0/tmp/msft-aumc-security-patches-1d6d5e68-8f77-488b-9b23-d5f3ea923a45.list does not exist here either.

This file contains the following just before being deleted by the update check itself:

URIs: http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu Suites: noble-security

This format should not have the .list extension but .sources according to https://repolib.readthedocs.io/en/latest/deb822-format.html

It's missing the Types element

It's missing the Components element

Reviewing the link provided by Verhaeghe Jan. The Types element is in the file as stated by the article already. This does not provide any solutions to the issue.

For the Gibhub article Verhaeghe linked. I change the file format of ubuntu.sources to ubuntu.list. This causing the same error. Only difference is the file it references. It also breaks manually patching. Ex apt upgrade command.

I would appreciate any further assistance, or a link to any GitHub pages that will receive a wider audience.

The repolib has no beneficial information as to this specific situation

The Github link did provide additional information on what is potentially wrong. Unfortunately I modified the files that were in the comments. This stops azure update manager and the normal system from checking for update. Example apt update will error out.

It seems to me that the problem and possible solution is obvious as the scripts used by Azure Update Manger need a tiny modification to use or ensure the compatible list format. Solving this is beyond the scope of the user or admin, but within the resposibility of the Azure team.

Is there any information available about the roadmap to fix this. At the moment we have various Ubuntu VMs with 20.04, 22.04 and 24.04 that are not properly working with the Azure Update Manager, but run into the reported problem and then refuse to trigger the automatic update, making it necessary to manually do the required update on all Ubuntu VMs, which is not acceptable for a longer period of time.

Azure Update Management still have issues with Ubuntu 24.04. machines. Our ubuntu.sources contain:

Types: deb
URIs: http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/
Suites: noble noble-updates noble-backports
Components: main restricted universe multiverse

But it looks more like it fails on temporary created .list files.

I have the same issue on 24.04 using Azure Update Manager.

Still the same. Still not working. Microsoft is still silent about it. Last info was that they are aware of the issue and are working on it, but even upon request they did not reveal any road map. This is many weeks since. Given the fact that the bug and the fix is quite obvious this clearly states that there is no will to solve the issue or to provide this kind of service. Lacking to clearly state this officially expands the statement, that they are to big to bother telling you about stuff that does not work and wont be supported. There is lot of stuff that works nicely and is supported well, but the ability to run Linux VMs and use infrastructure functionality on it, seems to be clearly marked as deprecated internally, without telling us yet. The pitty is, that this raises concerns what other features and functions are already or might become soon deprecated without officically telling. Therefore I see the whole Azure infrastructure more and more as a risky bet. Sad.

In short, "Azure Update service enumerates all files within the /etc/apt/sources.list.d directory and creates its own just-in-time list of sources. The problem is, as of Ubuntu 24 (possibly earlier... I dunno, I'm a Windows guy), the list of Ubuntu sources is in deb822 format by default, under the file ubuntu.sources"..."Microsoft have acknowledged this is a bug, and they will fix it. In the meantime, if you need to patch your Ubuntu 24 systems with Azure Update Manager, you can remove the ubuntu.sources file from that directory and replace it with a file in the original *.list format"

For me it is wokring for 3 days now. I read at Github that the rollout of the fix can take the whole February. The implementation will be done region by region and existing machines will always get updated versions only some time after new VMs created soon after a release is available in a region.

I've been able to get this working for our Ubuntu 24.04 VM's on-premise.

For this I've edited the file /var/lib/waagent/Microsoft.SoftwareUpdateManagement.LinuxOsUpdateExtension-1.0.50.0/AUMExtension/AptitudePackageManager.py

And replaced line 32 from:

self.prep_security_sources_list_cmd = 'sudo grep -hR security /etc/apt/sources.list /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ > ' + os.path.normpath(self.security_sources_list)

to:

self.prep_security_sources_list_cmd = 'sudo grep -hR security /etc/apt/sources.list /etc/apt/sources.list.d/' + os.path.normpath(self.security_sources_list) self.prep_security_sources_list_cmd += " | sed \"s/^/Types: deb\\nComponents: main\\n/\""

After this change I was able to do assessments and install updates via the One-Time update button, but I've not yet checked if it still works with maintenance configurations.

This might not persist across updates, so you should probably update the azcmagent first and of course create a backup of the file.

We are having the same issue. We got 2 linux box running Ubuntu 22.04 LTS and 24.04 LTS. Failed to patch 24.04 but it succeeded on 22.04.
